WHO IS THE HE OF DANIEL 9:27?
Soon after the catching away of the Church, the Body of Christ, to meet the Lord in the air (the Rapture), a false peace treaty will be confirmed by the Antichrist and the “many” (Israel, the Palestinians, the Arab League, the United Nations, the European Union, the United States and Russia). Even now, in the last days of the age of grace, we are seeing many indications of the end times. The confirming of the peace treaty (called the covenant here in Daniel chapter 9) will begin the seven-year-long period of history called the Tribulation. (All underlining ours).
Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week…
The big question in this verse is: Who is he?
Using Daniel 9:26 as his proof, Sir Robert Anderson in the late 1800’s popularized the idea that “The Coming Prince,” (the Antichrist) would be “presented as the head of the revived Roman empire of the future.” Most prophecy evangelists since then have followed in his footsteps.
In trying to follow this logic we attempted to find the Revived Roman Empire in the Scriptures. To our amazement not only could we not find the Revived Roman Empire, we could not find a single mention of the name Rome, Roman or even Romans in the Book of Daniel or any other Old or New Testament book of prophecy.
Though apparently hidden from theologians for centuries, the answer is clearly given, not back in verse 26, but in the remainder of verse 27:
27…and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
The pronoun he here does not refer to Prince Titus of the Roman Empire in verse 26 but back to Antiochus Epiphanes (the King of the North), the ruler of the northern Seleucid Empire described in the last part of verse 27. He was the Little Horn of Daniel 8:9-12 and Daniel 11:30,31 who desecrated the Temple in Jerusalem:
Daniel 8:9 And out of one of them came forth a little horn…
11 by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. 12 And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression…
Daniel 11:30…he (Antiochus) shall be grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that forsake the holy covenant. 31 And arms shall stand on his part, and they shall pollute the sanctuary of strength, and shall take away the daily sacrifice, and they shall place the abomination that maketh desolate.
Antiochus Epiphanes desecrated the Jerusalem Temple by offering a sow to the pagan god Zeus upon the Altar. Antiochus was a type of the future Little Horn (Antichrist).
The antitype or future Little Horn will also desecrate the Temple in the future during the Tribulation:
Daniel 12:11 And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.
The abomination that maketh desolate set up in the Tribulation will be an image erected to the Little Horn (the Beast, Antichrist) that demands universal worship of the image:
Revelation 13:14 …they should make an image to the Beast…15 And he (the False Prophet) had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
The covenant referred to in Daniel 9:27 refers to a peace treaty that will be made with Israel in the last days. At some point it will be confirmed by the Little Horn, the King of the North (Antichrist). That signing will commence the seven years of the Tribulation. The covenant will undoubtedly guarantee Israel peace and allow them to build their Third Temple. That Tribulation Temple is the one described by Paul in:
II Thessalonians 2:
3…that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
Although pretending to be a friend of Israel, half way through the seven-year Tribulation the Little Horn (Antichrist) will change his attitude toward them after he receives a deadly wound to the head and is miraculously revived by Satan:
Revelation 13:
3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
14…which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Antichrist will then break the peace treaty and sit in the newly rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem proclaiming himself as God. Daniel refers to this event during the middle of the Tribulation in Daniel 9:27 (see verse above).
The prophetic week spoken of in verse 27 is a week of years or seven years called the time of Jacob’s trouble in Jeremiah 30:7. The midst of the week is the halfway point of 3½ years in the middle of the seven years. The last word of the verse, desolate, means desolator and refers to the Little Horn (Antichrist) of Daniel chapters 7, 8 and 11. The prophet Isaiah confirms that this peace treaty will prove to be false:
Isaiah 28:
14 Wherefore hear the word of the LORD, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem.
15 Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves.
18 And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand: when the overflowing scourge shall pass through then ye shall be trodden down by it.
More clues to the identification of Little Horn are given in the eleventh chapter of Daniel. No less than 6 times in Daniel 11:1-35 is the term, the King of the North, used to establish the fact that Antiochus Epiphanes was a type of the future Antichrist. The true Antichrist is clearly described in Dan 11:36-45:
Daniel 11:
36 And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvelous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.
37 Neither shall he regard the God of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall magnify himself above all.
38 But in his estate shall he honor the God of forces; and a god whom his fathers knew not shall he honour with gold, and silver, and with precious stones, and pleasant things.
39 Thus shall he do in the most strong holds with a strange god, whom he shall acknowledge and increase with glory: and he shall cause them to rule over many, and shall divide the land for gain.
Antichrist, the King of the North, the willful King of verse 36 is the same as the King of fierce countenance of Daniel chapter 8. A careful comparison of Daniel chapter 8:23-26 with Daniel chapter 11:36-39 will confirm this. The word indignation in verse 36 is often used by the prophets to describe the desecration against God by Antichrist during the Great Tribulation.
The desire of women is usually understood to mean the son of Mary, the Messiah. The God of forces in verse 38 is thought to refer to a secret weapon that will give Antichrist military advantage over all other enemies.
To divide the land for gain in verse 39 appears to be the plan devised by Shimon Peres in the Oslo Accords that would divide the land of Israel into two states, Israel and Palestine. According to this plan, Israel’s borders would revert back to the indefensible 1967 borders thus eliminating the territory won by them in the June 7, 1967 “Miracle War.”
As we continue with Daniel chapter 11, we now jump ahead to the events in the last half of the seven-year Tribulation. The question now becomes:
WHO IS THE HIM of Daniel 11:40?
40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.
The first him in this verse refers to Antichrist, the King of the North. The second him refers to the King of the South. The he in this verse refers to the King of the North.
Additional help regarding the pronouns he in Daniel 9:27 and him in Daniel 11:40 is found in the following two sources:
1. Jerome, the early Church writer spoke of these verses in his Commentary on the Book of Daniel. He equates the he in Dan. 9:27 and the first him in verse 11:40 with the Antichrist. On Dan. 11:40 he states: “Those of our viewpoint refer these details also to the Antichrist, asserting that he shall first fight against the king of the South, or Egypt.”
The one fighting against the King of the South is, of course, the King of the North (The Antichrist).
2. Edward J. Young agrees and says of the King of the South: “He is a king to come, typified by the historical Ptolemies, for the battles between the South and the North evidently point forward to this great battle in the end of the age. The two opponents are the Antichrist and the king of the South who begins the battle by pushing or butting against his enemy. Like a whirlwind the northern king will come in retaliation…the enemy King of the North comes into the Delightsome Land, i.e., Palestine.”
To these we might add from Philip R. Newell’s book on Daniel (p. 181):
“In reading Daniel 11:40, it may be well to interpolate slightly in order to establish the identity of the willful king as the last “king of the north,” which it seems apparent he must be, in order to fulfill completely the typical foreshadowing of Antiochus:
“And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north (whose career has occupied our attention in vv. 36-39) shall come against him (the king of the south) like a whirlwind,” and so on. This final campaign between the two ancient enemies will again involve Palestine (the “glorious land,” v.41; “the glorious holy mountain,” v.45).
So we see that the first pronoun him in Daniel 11: 40 refers to Antichrist, the willful King of verse 36 who is also called here the King of the North. Among other names attributed to Antichrist in the Bible are: The Little Horn, the Wilful King, the Assyrian, Gog, the Beast, and the Man of Sin. As we have seen, the second pronoun him in v. 40 refers to the King of the South (Egypt).
Revelation 13:3 indicates that after Antichrist is healed from his deadly wound to the head, he will enter the newly rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem and proclaim himself as God. Some time later Egypt will respond by attacking him (push at him). In response the Antichrist, King of the North, will retaliate against him (the King of the South) like a whirlwind. This resulting battle is fully described in Ezekiel 38 and 39 when Russia shall “come from thy place out of the north parts…with a great company, and a mighty army.” (Ez.38:15; 39:2)
Daniel 11:
41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
42 He shall stretch forth his hand also upon the countries: and the land of Egypt shall not escape.
43 But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.
The pronoun he in verse 41 is the Antichrist, the King of the North. He enters the glorious land (Israel) and subdues Egypt and the Muslim lands surrounding Israel. The only lands to escape will be Edom, Moab and Ammon located in modern Jordan today. It will be here in the area of Petra that God will protect the Messianic Jews during the last 3½ years of the Tribulation.
The words, at his steps in verse 43 mean in his retinue inferring that the Libyans and the Ethiopians (modern Sudan) once dominated, will assist the Antichrist.
44 But tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him: therefore he shall go forth with great fury to destroy, and utterly to make away many.
The tidings out of the east and out of the north refer to the invasion by the Kings of the East (China, North Korea, etc…). They will cross the dried up Euphrates River north of Israel in the last days (Rev. 9:13-19). To make away many in verse 44 means to destroy many.
Vladimir Zhirinovsky, Vice Chairman of the Russian State Duma (Senate), leaked a clue to the possible power of the King of the North to the world on May 22, 2011 in a television interview. Here are some of his quotes:
“The American government in Washington DC has no future and would collapse. Russia has new weapons that no one knows about. With them we will destroy any part of the planet within 15 minutes. 120 million will die, whole continents will be put to sleep forever.”
The US government takes these warnings seriously. In April 1997 then US Secretary of Defense William Cohen referred to the threat as an “eco-type of terrorism whereby they can alter the climate, set off earthquakes, volcanoes remotely thorough the use of electromagnetic waves.” As a result, America is also pursuing these types of weapons.
45 And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.
Antichrist will locate his last battlefield headquarter between the Dead Sea and the Mediterranean near the Valley of Jehoshaphat (the Brook Kidron) probably on the Mount of Olives, Joel 3:2.
As we saw earlier, the Apostle Paul places Antichrist in Jerusalem during the Tribulation and describes him as follows:
II Thessalonians 2:
3…that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.
When Jesus departed from the Temple for the last time and began teaching on the Mount of Olives, He was asked the question:
Matthew 24:
3 Tell us, when shall these things be? And what shall be the sign of thy coming, and the end of the world (age)?
Before telling the Apostles what was going to happen in the Tribulation, Christ first tells them what was going to happen to them during the Acts period before the Tribulation: Luke 21: 12 But before all these, they shall lay their hands on you, and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues, and into prisons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name’s sake. Christ then reveals the signs of the beginning of the Tribulation (the beginning of sorrows v. 8):
Matthew 24:
5 …many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
6 And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of war… 7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.
He then reveals what will happen during the last 3½ years of the Great Tribulation:
Matthew 24:
9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name’s sake.
10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.
Ezekiel 39 informs us that after his conquest of Egypt, Gog, the King of the North, the Antichrist, will himself be defeated at Armageddon and then the Messianic Kingdom will be established:
Ezekiel 39:
1 Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Mesheck and Tubal:
4 Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee, I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
21 And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them.
22 So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward.
